In compiling this dictionary of organ terminology the webmaster gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Mr John Pike Mander. Apprenticed in 1969 to, and later working with Rudolf von Beckerath of Hamburg, Mr Mander became Managing Director of the English organ builders N.P. Mander Ltd following Noel Mander's retirement in 1983.

We invite you to visit our fully documented and illustrated website featuring the outstanding baroque German organ-builder Gottfried Silbermann. Friend and colleague of JS Bach, expert acoustician and metallurgist, Silbermann worked mainly in Saxony, southeast Germany, where 31 of his fine instruments are still in existence (full listing provided).
The village of Helbigsdorf has an instrument in fine condition, of typical Silbermann design and construction. The frescoe on the barrel-vaulted wooden ceiling is itself worth a visit! Helbigsdorf is not far from Frauenstein, home of the unique Silbermann Museum.
The photo above shows the little single manual Silbermann organ at Dittersdorf southeast of Dresden.
The city of Freiberg is home today to four Gottfried Silbermann organs in three churches. The main cathedral organ must surely rank as one of the world's finest: the three-manual, 44-register instrument illustrated above. Amazingly perhaps, this magnificent instrument was only Silbermann's second work, built between 1711 and 1714.
There is a highly informative Silbermann Museum in the picturesque little town of Frauenstein, Saxony, centrally situated for all the Silbermann organs.
